A polymer fiber made from aromatic polyamide. Polyamide is a general term for polymers that have amide bonds (-CONH-) in the molecule, and this fiber was named to distinguish it from aliphatic polyamide (nylon). Compared to conventional fibers, it has superior tensile strength, elasticity, and heat resistance. A representative example is Kevlar (trademark) from DuPont (DuPont Group), which is one-seventh the weight of steel fiber and one-half the weight of glass fiber, but has the same tensile strength. It is used not only for special applications such as bulletproof vests, but also for helmets, tire cords for radial tires, ropes, etc. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
