A polymer fiber made from aromatic polyamide. Polyamide is a general term for polymers that have amide bonds (-CONH-) in the molecule, and this fiber was named to distinguish it from aliphatic polyamide (nylon). Compared to conventional fibers, it has superior tensile strength, elasticity, and heat resistance. A representative example is Kevlar (trademark) from DuPont (DuPont Group), which is one-seventh the weight of steel fiber and one-half the weight of glass fiber, but has the same tensile strength. It is used not only for special applications such as bulletproof vests, but also for helmets, tire cords for radial tires, ropes, etc.

芳香族ポリアミドを使った高分子繊維。ポリアミドとは，分子内にアミド結合（−CONH−）を持つ高分子の総称で，この繊維は脂肪族ポリアミド（ナイロン）と区別するために名付けられた。従来の繊維に比べ，引張強度，弾力性，耐熱性に優れる。代表的存在であるデュポン社（デュポン財閥）のケブラー（商標）は，スチール繊維の７分の１，ガラス繊維の２分の１の重量で，同程度の引張強度を持っている。防弾チョッキなどの特殊な用途だけでなく，ヘルメット，ラジアルタイヤのタイヤコード，ロープなどに使用される。
