Around 1450 - 1536 A French humanist and pioneer of the Reformation. His Latin name was Faber Stapulensis. He was born in Etaples, Picardy, in northern France, and studied in Paris, where he became a professor of humanities. In 1507, he was appointed abbot of Saint-Germain-des-Prés and became a representative figure of French Renaissance scholarship. He published Bible studies and translations, and was a religious reformer. His emphasis on the doctrine of justification by faith was ahead of Luther's. In 1520, he began reforming the diocese of Meaux with his disciple Guillaume Briçonnet and others, and completed the first French translation of the New Testament. However, he was soon accused of heresy and fled, and remained silent thereafter. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
