A French humanist and pioneer of the Reformation. His Latin name was Faber Stapulensis. He was born in Etaples, Picardy, in northern France, and studied in Paris, where he became a professor of humanities. In 1507, he was appointed abbot of Saint-Germain-des-Prés and became a representative figure of French Renaissance scholarship. He published Bible studies and translations, and was a religious reformer. His emphasis on the doctrine of justification by faith was ahead of Luther's. In 1520, he began reforming the diocese of Meaux with his disciple Guillaume Briçonnet and others, and completed the first French translation of the New Testament. However, he was soon accused of heresy and fled, and remained silent thereafter.

フランスの人文学者，宗教改革の先駆者。ラテン名ファベル･スタプレンシスFaber Stapulensis。北フランス，ピカルディーのエタープルに生まれ，パリに学び人文学教授となり，1507年サン･ジェルマン･デ･プレ修道院長の地位についてフランスのルネサンスの学問を代表した。聖書研究と聖書翻訳を出版し，宗教改革の志を抱き，〈信仰による義認〉の教理の強調はルターに先んじている。20年に門下のブリソンネGuillaume Briçonnetたちとともにモー司教区の改革に着手，新約聖書の初のフランス語訳を完成するなどしたが，まもなく異端の嫌疑をかけられて逃亡，以後沈黙する。
