Shinichiro Okada - Shinichiro Okada

Architect. Born in Tokyo. Graduated from the Department of Architecture at the College of Engineering, Tokyo Imperial University in 1906 (Meiji 39). He won first place in a designated design competition for the Central Public Hall in Nakanoshima, Osaka in 1912, and was active from the Taisho to the early Showa eras. He showed outstanding talent in architectural theory and stylistic design. His major works include the Kabukiza Theatre (1925), Tokyo Prefectural Museum of Art (1926), and the Meiji Seimeikan (Meiji Life Insurance Company) (1934). He was also responsible for the restoration of Nikolai Cathedral, which was damaged in the Great Kanto Earthquake. He also trained architects as a professor at Waseda University and Tokyo School of Fine Arts. The Tokyo Prefectural Museum of Art was renamed the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in 1943 (Showa 18), and was rebuilt in 1975 (Showa 50) (designed by Maekawa Kunio). The Meiji Seimeikan was designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 1997 (Heisei 9).

建築家。東京に生まれる。1906年(明治39)東京帝国大学工科大学建築学科卒業。1912年大阪中之島の中央公会堂の指名競技設計で一等入選し、大正から昭和初年にかけて活躍。建築論と様式設計に抜群の才能を示す。おもな作品には歌舞伎(かぶき)座(1925)、東京府立美術館(1926)、明治安田生命保険相互会社の明治生命館(1934)などがある。関東大震災で破損したニコライ堂の修復も担当。また早稲田(わせだ)大学、東京美術学校の教授として建築家の育成にあたった。なお、東京府美術館は1943年(昭和18)東京都美術館と名称を変更、1975年(昭和50)建て替えられた(前川国男設計)。明治生命館は1997年(平成9)国の重要文化財に指定された。
