Abnormal proliferation

...the phenomenon in which certain plankton multiply rapidly in a short period of time, causing the water in ocean areas (mainly inland bays and coastal areas) and lakes to appear colored. Rapid proliferation (blooming) is generally referred to as abnormal proliferation. The color can vary from reddish brown, brown, green, yellow-green, or blue-green, depending on the pigments specific to the plankton species that make up the red tide and their physiological state.
