An old town in Yamato County, occupying the lower reaches of the Yabe River in southern Fukuoka Prefecture. The main settlement developed as a river port under Yanagawa Castle and as a post town on the Higo Kaido road. The Kagoshima Main Line runs through the town. Sake brewing and vegetable cultivation are thriving, and the town also produces pickles and bricks. It is home to the Seisui-dera Temple Head Temple Garden (a scenic spot), the Kogoishi stone cages of Onnayama (historic site), and the Kowaka dance that has been passed down along the Oe River. In January 2007, it merged with Yamakawa Town, Yamato County, and Takada Town, Miike County, to form Miyama City. 37.73 km2 . Population: 23,762 (2005). 福岡県南部,矢部川下流域を占める山門(やまと)郡の旧町。主集落は柳川城下の河港,肥後街道の宿場町として発達した。鹿児島本線が通じる。酒造,野菜栽培が盛んで,漬物,煉瓦も産する。清水(せいすい)寺本坊庭園(名勝),女山(ぞやま)の神籠石(こうごいし)(史跡)があり,大江には幸若(こうわか)舞が伝わる。2007年1月,山門郡山川町,三池郡高田町と合併し,みやま市となる。37.73km2。2万3762人(2005)。
