Theory of dynastic succession - Ouchōkōtairō
This is a theory that the lineage of the ancient Japanese emperors was not an unbroken succession, as has been emphasized since the Meiji period, but rather there were several changes in political power. It began with Tsuda Sokichi's argument that there is a paragraph in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki between Emperor Chuai and Emperor Ojin, and that before Chuai, the lineage of the emperors was passed down from father to son, and there were only titles of emperor, without given names, making it seem unlikely that they actually existed, and that the emperors recorded in the 6th century Teiki were those who came after Ojin. Later, Hayashiya Tojiro preached the ``Ojin New Dynasty Theory,'' which claimed that there were no emperors before Ojin, and Mizuno Yu considered the period before Chūai to be the ``ancient dynasty'' and the period after Ojin to be the ``middle dynasty,'' and thought that the Kuna Kingdom, which fought against Yamataikoku, migrated eastward to form this ``middle dynasty.'' He further developed Egami Hajime's theory that the Yamato dynasty was born from the conquest of a horse-riding people, and argued for what might be called the ``neo-horse-riding people theory.''
