Komoro [city] - Komoro

Japanese: 小諸[市] - こもろ
Komoro [city] - Komoro
A city in eastern Nagano Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The city center is located in the Saku Basin, where the Chikuma River flows at the southwest foot of Mt. Asama. In the early modern period, it flourished as a castle town of the Makino clan of Komoro Domain, and a post town where the Hokkoku Kaido and Saku-Koshu Kaido roads diverged. From the Taisho to the early Showa period, it was one of the prefecture's leading silk-reeling areas. The third-sector Shinano Railway runs through the city, branching off from the Koumi Line, and in November 1996, the Joshinetsu Expressway was opened to Koshoku City (now Chikuma City). Electrical equipment, general machinery, and transportation equipment industries are thriving. The surrounding area is a producer of apples, peaches, and highland vegetables. The ruins of Komoro Castle (Kaikoen), famous for the poems of Shimazaki Toson, are located here, and the northern mountain ranges, including Takamine Plateau, belong to Joshinetsu Kogen National Park. 98.55 km2 . 43,997 people (2010).
