Hitoyoshi Basin

Japanese:
Hitoyoshi Basin

A structural basin formed by a spindle-shaped fault running roughly east-west in the southern part of Kumamoto Prefecture, at the junction of the northern and southern Kyushu mountains. It has an area of about 72 square kilometers and an elevation of 100 to 200 meters. On either side of the Kuma River, which flows east-west through the center of the basin, is a plateau of composite alluvial fans and terraces in the southern part, and hills of Aso welded tuff in the northern part. Both were first cultivated by the introduction of water. In particular, the Hyakutaro Ditch and Kounomi Ditch, which were excavated for over a century from the end of the 16th century, contributed greatly to the development of rice paddies in the southern part. The basin area includes Hitoyoshi City and four other towns and three villages, and Hitoyoshi City, which occupies the western part of the area, is the economic and cultural center of the Kuma region. It is served by the JR Hisatsu Line, the Kuma River Railway, National Route 219, and the Kyushu Expressway, and has the Hitoyoshi Interchange.
