Located in the central part of the Republic of Tajikistan, Central Asia, this is the highest peak in the country. It was also the highest peak in the former Soviet Union. Formerly known as Pik Stalina, it is 7,495m above sea level. It stands at the point where the Academy of Sciences Range and the Peter I Range join in the western Pamir Plateau, and its slopes are covered with glaciers and perpetual snow. The Fedchenko Glacier on the eastern side is one of the largest in the world. Its altitude was confirmed by surveying in 1932, and it was renamed to its current name in 1962. It was first climbed by EMAbalakov of the Soviet Union in 1933, but until then it was called Mount Garmo. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
