Battle of Iwato

Japanese: 岩門合戦 - いわとかっせん

In 1285 (Kōan 8), at Iwamon, Togo, Naka County, Chikuzen Province, Muto Kagesuke instigated a battle that ended in his defeat and death. This battle was a spillover from the Koan War, which was caused by a clash between the Miuchibito forces and the Gokenin class, to Kyushu, but it was also a struggle between Muto Kagesuke's eldest son and his illegitimate son against his elder brother Muto Tsunesuke, who was the eldest son, and a resistance against the strengthening of the Hojo clan's control over Chinzei. Participants in the battle included warriors from Chikuzen, Chikugo, Buzen, and Hizen, and the territories of Kagesuke's side, mainly in Chikuzen and Buzen, were confiscated and distributed to the Gokenin as a reward for their efforts in the Mongol War in 1881 and the Iwamon Battle.

1285年(弘安8)筑前国那珂郡東郷岩門で，武藤景資（かげすけ）が引き起こし，敗死した合戦。この合戦は，御内人（みうちびと）勢力と御家人層の衝突によって起こった弘安合戦の九州への波及であったが，武藤景資の，惣領で兄の武藤経資（つねすけ）に対する惣領･庶子間の抗争であると同時に，北条氏―得宗の鎮西支配強化に対する抵抗でもあった。合戦の参加者には，筑前，筑後，豊前，肥前などの武士がおり，筑前，豊前を中心とする景資方の所領は没収されて，81年の蒙古合戦やこの岩門合戦の恩賞として御家人に配分された。
