[Died] March 27, 2006. Krakow Polish author. He studied at a medical university, and after the Second World War, in 1946, when Lłów was incorporated into Ukilana, he moved to Krakow and began his creative career. His three-part novel series Czas nieutracony (Unlost Time), published between 1947 and 1950, was banned by the Communist government. In 1951, he made his debut as a science fiction author with the science fiction novel Venus Unresponsive (original title Astronauti). He published a series of science fiction novels that dealt with fundamental themes such as the potential and limits of human ability and the future of civilization, and became known worldwide as a science fiction author. His representative works include the novels Eden (1959), Solaris (1961), and Desert Planet (1964), short stories such as The Tale of Pirx (1968), and the metafiction Doskonala próżnia (1971). He is also famous for his literary theories such as Philosophy of Chance (1968). Solaris has been made into a film twice, Solaris (1972) by Andrei Tarkovsky and Solaris (2002) by Steven Soderbergh. A unit of dose equivalent. The symbol is rem. It is mainly used in the field of radiation protection. 1 rem is the amount of any type of radiation that produces the same biological effect as 1 rad (rad) of X-rays or gamma rays. It is generally expressed as dose equivalent (rem) = dose (rad) x quality factor. Currently, the official unit of dose equivalent is not rem but the SI sievert (Sv). 1 Sv = 100 rem.

線量当量の単位。記号は rem。主として放射線防護関係に用いられる。1remは，どんな種類の放射線に対しても 1rad（ラド）の X線やγ線と同じ生物学的効果を生じる量に相当する。一般に線量当量（レム）＝線量（ラド）×線質係数で示される。現在，線量当量の公式の単位はレムではなく，国際単位系 SIのシーベルト（Sv）を用いる。1Sv＝100remである。
