It is the northernmost island of the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago in the Arctic Ocean in the northern part of the Russian Federation, and the third largest island in the archipelago. It has an area of 9,006 km2, with the highest point at 780 m above sea level. Two-thirds of the island is covered by glaciers, and the rest of the lowlands are bare land or tundra.
