Born: January 6, 1859, Sydney [Died] September 13, 1938. British philosopher. Educated at the University of Melbourne and the University of Oxford, he won Green's Prize for Moral Philosophy in 1888 for "Moral Order and Progress." He remained at Oxford as a fellow, but went to Germany in 1990-91 to study psychology under Hugo Münsterberg, and returned to England in 1993 to become professor of philosophy at Owens College, Manchester. Influenced by Kant's philosophy, he advocated critical realism. He considered time and space to be the womb of reality, and developed a unique metaphysics from the standpoint of neo-realism. His main works are "Space, Time and Deity" (1920) and "Beauty and Other Forms of Value" (33). Alexander |
