British philosopher. Educated at the University of Melbourne and the University of Oxford, he won Green's Prize for Moral Philosophy in 1888 for "Moral Order and Progress." He remained at Oxford as a fellow, but went to Germany in 1990-91 to study psychology under Hugo Münsterberg, and returned to England in 1993 to become professor of philosophy at Owens College, Manchester. Influenced by Kant's philosophy, he advocated critical realism. He considered time and space to be the womb of reality, and developed a unique metaphysics from the standpoint of neo-realism. His main works are "Space, Time and Deity" (1920) and "Beauty and Other Forms of Value" (33).

Alexander, Grover Cleveland

Born February 26, 1887 in Elba, Nebraska
Died: November 4, 1950. St. Paul, Nebraska. American professional baseball player. Renowned for his excellent control, he was said to be one of the best right-handed pitchers in the history of the major leagues. He played for the Philadelphia Phillies from 1911-17 and 1930, the Chicago Cubs from 1918-26, and the St. Louis Cardinals from 1926-29. In total, he had 373 wins (374 according to another count) and 208 losses. In 1916, he had 33 wins, 16 of which were shutouts, setting a new record for the most shutout wins in a single season in the major leagues. His total number of shutout wins is said to be 88 or 90. Inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1938.

Alexander, Harold (Rupert Leofric George), 1st Earl Alexander of Tunis

Born: December 10, 1891, London
[Died] June 16, 1969. Slough, Buckinghamshire. British military officer and general. Led the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940. In August 1942, he became the Commander-in-Chief of the British Middle East. In July 1943, he led the invasion of Sicily, and in October, the Italian campaign. From 1944 to 1945, he was the Commander-in-Chief of the Allied forces on the Italian front. He was a Field Marshal. After the war, he was Governor-General of Canada, and Minister of Defence in the Conservative government from 1952 to 1954.
