Onin War - Bunmei War

Japanese: 応仁･文明の乱 - おうにんぶんめいのらん

A civil war that took place in Kyoto from 1467 to 1477 (Onin 1 to Bunmei 9) towards the end of the Muromachi period. In this war, the Eastern Army (Hosokawa Katsumoto's side) and the Western Army (Yamana Mochitoyo (Sozen's side)) fought fierce battles all over the country, reflecting the political situation in each region as well as the situation in the center.

The causes of the rebellion were complex, but one of the more overt factors was a dispute over succession within the powerful shugo families and conflict between powerful shugo daimyo.
