The Battle of Gosannen

A war fought in the Ou region from 1083 to 1087 during the late Heian period. After the death of Takesada, the son of Kiyohara Takenori, who had conquered the Ou region in the Battle of Zenkunen, there was a dispute between Masahira and Iehira and Kiyohira (both Takesada's biological and adopted sons), and after Masahira's death, Iehira and Kiyohira fought each other. Around this time, Minamoto no Yoshiie entered the country as the governor of Mutsu and attempted to mediate between the two, but failed. He came to Kiyohira's aid at his request and opposed Iehira, who had allied with his uncle Takehira. The war ended with Kiyohira's victory in 1083 when he captured Kanazawa Castle, where Takehira and his men were holed up. Kiyohira served as the governor of Oshu and the general of the naval base, paving the way for the prosperity of the three generations of the Fujiwara clan (Kiyohira, Motohira, Hidehira) centered on Hiraizumi. On the other hand, the Imperial Court did not reward Yoshiie, viewing it as a private fight, but through this campaign Yoshiie also organized and mobilized eastern warriors, building a base of power for the Minamoto clan in the eastern provinces.

平安後期、永保三年（一〇八三）から寛治元年（一〇八七）にかけて奥羽地方で行なわれた戦役。前九年の役で奥羽地方を制覇した清原武則の子武貞の没後、真衡と家衡・清衡（ともに武貞の実子および養子）の間で紛争があり、真衡の死後には家衡と清衡が争った。この頃、陸奥守として源義家が入国して両者の調停をはかったが失敗し、清衡の請に応じてこれをたすけ、叔父武衡と組んだ家衡と対抗した。戦役は、寛治元年に武衡らのこもる金沢柵を攻落して清衡方の勝利に終わり、清衡は奥羽両国の押領使と鎮守府将軍を兼ねて、以後の平泉を中心とする藤原氏三代（清衡・基衡・秀衡）の栄華の基を開いた。他方、義家に対して、朝廷は私闘とみて行賞しなかったが、義家もこの戦役を通じて東国武士団を組織動員し、源氏の東国における勢力基盤を築いた。
