The predecessor of the Faculty of Music at Tokyo University of the Arts. It originated as the Music Investigation Section established in the Ministry of Education in 1879. In 1887, the Investigation Section was reorganized to establish the Tokyo Music School. In 1890, it moved from Hongo to the site of Nishishikenji Temple (today's Ueno Park, Taito Ward, Tokyo). In 1903, it became a regular technical school under the Technical School Act, and played a central role in training musicians and music education. In 1949, it merged with Tokyo School of Fine Arts to become Tokyo University of the Arts. 東京芸術大学音楽学部の前身。1879年文部省に設置された音楽取調掛を起源とする。1887年取調掛を改組して東京音楽学校を設立。1890年本郷から西四軒寺跡(今日の東京都台東区上野公園)に移った。1903年専門学校令による正規の専門学校となり,音楽家を養成するとともに音楽教育の中心的存在としての役割を果たした。1949年東京美術学校と合併して東京芸術大学となった。
