Comayagua (English spelling)

Japanese: コマヤグア(英語表記)Comayagua
Comayagua (English spelling)
A city in central Honduras. Capital of the department of the same name. It is located in the fertile Umuya River valley, about 60 km northwest of the capital Tegucigalpa. Founded in 1540, it prospered as the capital of the Spanish colony of Honduras. The city was burned during the revolution in 1827, but at that time the population was 18,000. It remained the capital of the republic until 1880, when the capital was moved to Tegucigalpa. Currently, it is a distribution center for coffee, tobacco, rice, and livestock produced in the surrounding agricultural areas, and is also home to industries such as pharmaceuticals, shoes, and cement. Many colonial-era buildings remain in the city, including several cathedrals built in the 16th century, the building that was the oldest university in Central America (1632), and the cathedral (1715). A major highway connecting the Pacific side and the Caribbean side runs through the city. Population: 39,500 (estimated 1989).
