A bulbous plant of the Amaryllidaceae family. The name was chosen in memory of the Duke of Brunswick, and the English name comes from the resemblance of the flower to a candlestick. There are about 10 species distributed in South Africa, and several species are cultivated for their interestingly shaped flowers that resemble amaryllis. In Japan, they flower from late summer to autumn, and the leaves unfold after the flowers. [Torazaburo Kawabata] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
