850-934 A prominent Arab scholar, especially important as a geographer. Born in a small village near Balkh in Central Asia, he later became a pupil of the philosopher Al-Kindi while studying in Iraq. In addition to traditional Islamic learning, he studied philosophy, astrology, astronomy and pharmacology, and left behind many works, most of which have been lost. His geographical work The Form of the World (c. 920), written in his later years, is a kind of world map that divides the entire territory of the Islamic Empire at that time into 20 parts, with short annotations on each map. This format was passed down to later geographers, and formed an important school of Islamic geography in the 9th and 10th centuries. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
