A prominent Arab scholar, especially important as a geographer. Born in a small village near Balkh in Central Asia, he later became a pupil of the philosopher Al-Kindi while studying in Iraq. In addition to traditional Islamic learning, he studied philosophy, astrology, astronomy and pharmacology, and left behind many works, most of which have been lost. His geographical work The Form of the World (c. 920), written in his later years, is a kind of world map that divides the entire territory of the Islamic Empire at that time into 20 parts, with short annotations on each map. This format was passed down to later geographers, and formed an important school of Islamic geography in the 9th and 10th centuries.

アラブの著名な学者。とくに地理学者として重要である。中央アジアのバルフ近くの小村に生まれ，のちイラク遊学中に哲学者キンディーの弟子となった。イスラムの伝統的学問のほか，哲学，占星術，天文学，薬学などを学び，多くの著作を残したが，ほとんど散逸した。晩年に著した地理書《世界の姿》(920ころ)は当時のイスラム帝国の全領域を20の部分に分けた一種の世界地図で，おのおのの地図には短い注釈が付されていた。この形式はのちの地理学者へ受け継がれ，9～10世紀イスラム地理学上の重要な一学派を形成した。
