A major British chemical manufacturer established in 1913. Its history dates back to 1816, when Courtauld produced silk thread and fabric. It was the first textile manufacturer in the world to commercialize artificial fibers, but later diversified into the fields of chemicals and paints, and has many subsidiaries both in Japan and overseas. In 1990, the textile business, which had been in operation since the company's founding, was separated into Courtaulds Textiles PLC, and the company focused on polymer and surface technology. The head office is in London, and the company once had operations in 45 countries around the world. In July 1998, this prestigious company, apart from its textile division, was acquired by the Dutch chemical company Akzo Nobel. S. Courtauld (1876-1947), the fourth generation founder, supported the establishment of the Courtauld Institute of Art and contributed to the relocation of the Warburg Institute (headed by Warburg) from Germany to the UK.
