A representative author of contemporary Turkish literature. Born in a farming village in the Adana region in southeastern Anatolia, he worked in a variety of jobs before moving to Istanbul to begin his writing career, and publishing excellent reportage as a freelance journalist. He entered the literary world in 1955 with Skinny Mehmet, and as a leader among socially conscious writers, he also participated in political activities. His style combines socialist realism with the traditions of Turkish folk literature, and is characterized by a simple prose style. [Koyama Koichiro]

現代トルコ文学を代表する作家。アナトリア南東部アダナ地方の農村に生まれ,種々の職業を遍歴したのちイスタンブールに出て文筆活動を始め,自由契約の記者として優れたルポルタージュを発表した。1955年《やせっぽちのメメット》をもって文壇に登場し,社会派作家のリーダーとして,政治活動にも参加した。その作風は社会主義リアリズムとトルコ民衆文学の伝統を結合させ,平易な文体が特徴的である。【小山 皓一郎】
