A leading Christian teacher in the Meiji and Taisho periods. Born in Kumamoto as the son of a samurai of the Kumamoto domain. In 1871 (Meiji 4), he entered the newly established Kumamoto Western School, and was baptized in 1876 by teacher L.L. Janes. He was a member of the so-called Kumamoto Band. In the same year, he entered Doshisha English School, and after graduating in 1879, he established the Shin Sakanamachi Church in Kyobashi, Tokyo, and became a pastor. The following year, in 1880, he founded the first Young Men's Association in Japan with Uemura Masahisa and Honda Yoitsu, and became its president, publishing its journal, Rikugo Magazine. In 1886, he published his book, Seikyo Shinron, in which he discussed Christianity in comparison with Confucianism. Following the death of Niijima Jo, he became the principal and president of Doshisha in 1990. He was pastor of the Reinanzaka Church in Tokyo from 1899. He was a central leader of Japanese Protestantism, serving as chairman of the Japan Christian Church Association from 1913 (Taisho 2) to 1922.
