A snail shell of the family Carbuncleidae (illustration). The shell is low and conical, reaching a height of 3 cm and a diameter of 6.3 cm, and is densely coiled into 10 stories with a single groove and a row of black spots along it, which sometimes form a continuous black band, along which a white band runs. This shape resembles a car, hence the name. The underside is flat with a large, deep umbilicus in the center. The apex of the shell is counterclockwise, but the rest of the coils are clockwise. The lid is small. It lives on sandy bottoms at depths of 20 to 60 meters south of the Boso Peninsula, and this species has the habit of parasitizing sea anemones and sucking their body fluids.

クルマガイ科の巻貝（イラスト）。殻は低い円錐形で高さ3cm，径6.3cmに達し，10階で密に巻いていて，それに沿って1本の溝と黒色の斑紋が並び，またこれが連続して黒い帯になることもあり，白色帯がそれに沿って走る。この形を車に見たててこの名がある。下面は平らで中央に大きく深い臍孔（せいこう）がある。殻頂の部分の巻きは左巻きであるが，その後の巻きは右巻きである。ふたは小さい。房総半島以南の水深20～60mの砂底にすむが，この類はイソギンチャク類に寄生して体液を吸う習性がある。
