Since Arabic science became important in world history during the Middle Ages, the so-called "Arabic science" refers to medieval Arabic science, and can be defined as "the science of people who engaged in cultural activities in Arabic from the latter half of the 8th century to the 15th century in the area unified by Islam, from Central Asia in the east to the Iberian Peninsula in the west and North Africa in the south." The first thing to note here is that this Arabic science does not mean the science of ethnically Arab people.

アラビア科学が世界史において重要な意味をもったのは中世においてであるから，いわゆる〈アラビア科学〉とは中世アラビア科学のことをさし，〈イスラムによって統一された地域――東は中央アジアから西はイベリア半島，南は北アフリカにわたる――において，8世紀後半から15世紀にかけてアラビア語で文化活動した人々の科学〉と定義しうる。ここでまず注意すべきは，このアラビア科学は人種的にアラブ人の科学を意味してはいないということである。
