Knob starfish - Knob starfish

Japanese: コブヒトデ - こぶひとで
Knob starfish - Knob starfish

A marine animal belonging to the family Oleasteridae in the class Starfish of the phylum Echinodermata. A heavy, hard coral reef starfish with many large bump-like protrusions on its back. The bumps are cone-shaped with pointed ends, and there are usually about 40 of them. The arms are over 15 centimeters long. The base color is gray-brown, clay, orange, red, etc., and the bumps are black, reddish brown, dark brown, etc. It is found in the coral reef areas south of the Ryukyu Islands, in the Indian Ocean, and the western Pacific Ocean. It has an imposing, heavy appearance and stands up well to preservation, so it is often made into dried specimens and used as ornaments.
