A village in Kuji County, at the northern tip of Ibaraki Prefecture. Population 4,538 (1995). It is located in the mountains upstream of Satogawa River, a tributary of the Kuji River. Most of the village is forested, with a high proportion of national forest. Forestry is thriving, and in addition to lumber, polished logs, shiitake mushrooms, etc. are produced. Formerly known as a horse-producing area, there was a livestock market in Onaka, but after World War II, the focus shifted to beef cattle fattening and dairy farming, and a 600-hectare pasture has also been created. 茨城県北端,久慈郡の村。人口4538(1995)。久慈川の支流,里川上流の山地に位置する。山林が村域の大部分を占め,国有林の割合が高い。林業が盛んで,素材のほか,みがき丸太,シイタケなどを産する。かつては馬産地として知られ,小中(おなか)には家畜市場が立っていたが,第2次大戦後は肉牛肥育,酪農にかわり,600haにのぼる放牧場もつくられている。わずかだが茶の栽培が行われている。1960年代以降,人口減少が続いている。
