A small island in Lake Onega in northwestern Russia. In the Middle Ages, it flourished as a stopover on the sea route connecting the White Sea and Novgorod. It is known for the wooden Preobrandskaya Church, built without a single nail. This Russian Orthodox church was built in 1714 and is 37 meters high with 22 domes of various sizes stacked on top of each other, giving it the nickname "Fantasy of the Domes." Other wooden buildings remaining include the Bokrovskaya Church, built in 1784, a bell tower, a windmill, a farmhouse, a barn, and a bathhouse. These wooden buildings were registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990. Related article: Wooden churches on the island of Chigi Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
