Born in 1614. A native of Edo. He is said to have studied Confucianism under Hayashi Razan and medicine under Yoshida Sakuan. He became the personal physician of Sakai Tadakiyo. He was a heavy drinker, and in 1648 he challenged Ikegami Tarouemon in a drinking contest, winning by drinking 1.5 to (27 liters). He described the encounter in his kana zoshi book "Suichou-ki."
