An old town in Kitakoma County, at the southwest foot of the Yatsugatake Mountains, in the northwestern tip of Yamanashi Prefecture. Development of the plateau has been progressing since ancient times, and highland vegetable cultivation and dairy farming are thriving. It is the junction of the Chuo Main Line and the Koumi Line, and is connected to the Chuo Expressway. It is a tourist base for the Yatsugatake Mountains and the Kiyosato Plateau.
