A locomotive powered by a gas turbine. It was first developed in Switzerland in 1941. Because gas turbines are high-speed rotary motors, they are smaller and lighter for their output than other internal combustion locomotives that use reciprocating motors, and they can use pulverized coal as well as light and heavy oil, making their fuel costs low. However, there are problems with adaptability to load fluctuations, and performance is affected by temperature and air pressure. They have been used in small numbers since the 1950s in the United States, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and other countries. → Related items Locomotives Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
