…Born in Vienna. He studied architecture and art, and after being wounded in World War I and hospitalized, he wrote a script that was adapted into a film by director Joe May (1880-1954). After that, he was recognized by producer Erich Pommer and entered the film industry, becoming a director at Decca in 1919. After the defeat, he attracted worldwide attention with his works such as “Doctor Mabuse” (1922), which was said to be “a record of the era,” “The Nibelungen” (1924), a grandiose film adaptation of a folk legend, and “Metropolis” (1926), which became a science fiction classic by depicting a fantastical future city. In addition, his first talkie, “M” (1932), based on the true story of a young girl’s murder, is considered a historical masterpiece that effectively used counterpoint between sound and image, but three years after its release, it was included in the list of banned films by the Nazis. …
