Year of birth: 8th/7th Meiji 1 (8th/25th 1868)
A novelist, poet and critic from the Meiji period. His real name was Taketaro. Other names included Shokou Kaerufune, Bimyosai, Bimyoko and Hiei. He was the son of Yoshio, a former samurai of the Nanbu clan. He was born in Kanda, Edo. He grew up with his mother Yoshi and step-grandmother, living separately from his father, who became the chief of the Shimane Prefectural Police. He dropped out of First Higher School. In 1885, while attending the University Preparatory School, he founded the Kenyusha with Ozaki Koyo and others, and launched the journal Garakuta Bunko. He experimented with colloquial and literary style in "Shokai Shosetsu Tengu" (1886-87). After failing to enter the Faculty of Letters at the Imperial University in 1887, he decided to pursue a career in literature and published the women's magazine Iratsume. In 1888, he established his position in the literary world with "Summer Trees," and left Kenyusha to become the editor-in-chief of Miyako no Hana. "Kocho" (1889) was well-received with illustrations of nude bodies by Watanabe Seitei, and he also participated in debates on Japanese verse and published "Nihon Daijisho" (1892-93). However, after his divorce from female writer Tazawa Inafune, he was ostracized by society due to the Inafune Incident (1896) surrounding Inafune's death, and he left the literary world. <Works> "Bityo Selected Works" <References> "Yamada Bityo" (Modern Literature Research Series, Volume 11), Yamamoto Masahide "Historical Study of the Origin of Modern Style"
