A town in the western Charente department in western France. Located on the left bank of the Charente River in the Aquitaine Basin, it is the center of grape growing and is world famous as a producer of brandy called Cognac. There are wine cellars for companies such as Martell, Hennessy, and Otard, and the production of barrels, corks, and bottles is also active. During the Wars of Religion (1562-98), it became a Protestant stronghold, and after the repeal of the Edict of Nantes, it temporarily declined, but prospered again after the discovery of the brandy-making method in 1787. There is a fortress gate ruin (13th century), the former castle of the Valois family, and an air force flying school. Population 20,247 (1982). cognac |
