Also called Connaught in English. Formerly a kingdom, it is now one of the four regions of the Republic of Ireland. Located west of the River Shannon. Divided into five counties, with Galway city at its centre. It is the region in Ireland where the Celtic culture remains the most. Area: 17,122 km2 . Population: 542,547 (2011).
