Ezo Yotsume - Ezo Yotsume

Japanese: エゾヨツメ - えぞよつめ

An insect of the Lepidoptera family Saturniidae (illustration). It is the smallest of the moths of this family found in Japan, with a span of about 6cm for males and about 9cm for females. There is a black mark in the center of the forewings, with a white mark in a shape of the letter "U" inside it, and the hindwings have a larger black ring with a blue interior and an anchor-shaped white mark in the center. The Japanese name Ezo Yotsume is a combination of the old name Ezo, as this moth was first discovered in Hokkaido, and the four large eye-like marks. Adults appear in the spring and fly to lights, but unlike other Saturniidae, they arrive just after sunset.

鱗翅目ヤママユガ科の昆虫（イラスト）。日本産のこの科のガとしてはもっとも小型で，開張も雄は6cm内外，雌は9cm内外。前翅中央には黒紋があって，その中に〈く〉の字形の白紋があり，後翅にはこれより大きな黒環があり，その中は青色，中央に錨形の白紋がある。エゾヨツメという和名は，最初に北海道で発見されたのでその古称のエゾに，4個の大きな眼状紋を結びつけたものである。成虫は春に出現し，灯火に飛来するが，他のヤママユガと違って，日没後すぐに飛来する。
