…A city in the Nile Delta in northern Egypt. Also called Damietta. Population 113,000 (1991). Located at the outlet of a tributary of the Nile, it faces Lake Manzala, a salt lake surrounded by sandbars. In ancient times it was called Ta Meht, meaning "the land of the north." At that time the city was located north of Ras al-Bal at the mouth of the river, and it was not until the Islamic period that it moved to its present location. …
