Captivity of Avignon

The term likens the submission of the papacy to the French monarchy over the seven generations of popes, from when Pope Clement V moved the papacy to Avignon in southern France in 1309 until Gregory XI returned to Rome in 1377, to the Babylonian Captivity of the Jews. The Avignon papacy continued in opposition to Rome from 1378 until 1417, ushering in a period of schism in the Church.

1309年教皇クレメンス５世が南フランスのアビニョンに教皇庁を移してから，1377年グレゴリウス11世がローマに帰るまで７代の間，教皇権がフランス王権に屈したことをユダヤ人のバビロン捕囚にたとえていう。1378年以後も1417年までローマに対抗してアビニョン教皇が続き，教会分裂（シスマ）時代となる。
