An ethnic group that makes up the Udmurt Republic in eastern Russia. Formerly known as "Bochaks," this name was used for a long time in documents. The population in the republic was about 690,000 (1979), and about 710,000 in the entire former Soviet Union. Their language belongs to the Permian group of the Finno-Ugric branch of the Uralic language family. There are dialect differences between the south and the north, and there are also notable differences in cultural characteristics such as visual arts. Their traditional occupation is agriculture. It is estimated that they settled in their current location between the 3rd and 9th centuries. From the 10th to the 12th centuries, they were under the control of the Volga Bulgars, and from the 13th to the 16th centuries, they came under the control of the Kipchak and Kazan Khanates, and in the mid-16th century, they became part of Russia. Reflecting this history, Finno-Ugric, Turkic, and Slavic characteristics can be seen in their language, visual arts, and culture, such as music.
