Burning incense has been practiced since ancient times in India to eliminate odors, but it has evolved into a way of making offerings to Buddha. Incense burners are containers used for this purpose, and there are various types, such as the sitting incense burner, the handle incense burner, the hanging incense burner, and the elephant incense burner. Ikoro is placed on the front desk and comes in a variety of types, including the hakusan koro, kasha koro, lotus-shaped koro, kiriku koro, octopus-leg koro, and kanae-shaped koro. Handled koro is a morning glory-shaped burner with a base and handle and is held in the hand, as seen on the ancient pedestal of the Tamamushi Zushi. Tsuri koro is hung from a ring, and the zoro is shaped like an elephant and was used by the recipient to step over it during the esoteric Buddhist initiation ceremony to purify the body. Later, incense burners came to be used for purposes other than Buddhist ceremonies, such as burning incense in rooms and on clothing, and many masterpieces of kiki koro used in the art of incense still remain.
