Wu Tingfang (English: Wǔ Tíng fāng)

1842‐1922
A modern Chinese politician and diplomat. A native of Xinhui County, Guangdong Province, his courtesy names were Wenjuk and Zhiyong. Born in Singapore, he studied in England and opened a law practice in Hong Kong, later joining Li Hongzhang's staff and serving as envoy to the United States and vice foreign minister. During the Xinhai Revolution, he supported a republican system and represented the revolutionary government in negotiations with Yuan Shikai. He later served as Minister of Justice, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Acting Prime Minister, among other positions, and also served as Foreign Minister in Sun Yat-sen's Law-Protection Government. He had strong pro-American and pro-British leanings. His son was Wu Chaoshu, who was Foreign Minister in the Kuomintang government. [Kubota Bunji]

中国近代の政治家，外交官。広東省新会県人。字は文爵，秩庸と号す。シンガポール生れ。イギリスに留学し香港で弁護士を開業，のち李鴻章の幕下に入り，駐米公使，外務次官を歴任。辛亥革命時には共和制に賛成し，革命政権代表として袁世凱との交渉を担当した。のち法相，外相，首相代理等を歴任，孫文の護法政府の外相をも務めた。親米英的傾向が強い。国民党政府の外相だった伍朝枢はその子息。【久保田文次】
