Antiques

Originally it meant cluttered and trivial things, but it can also refer to artistic paintings and calligraphy, swords, ceramics, etc. The custom of literati keeping these things used by ancient people as stationery for practical use and entertainment began in Japan during the Muromachi period, and they began to be called antiques around the mid-Edo period. In the Meiji period, old art and craft items that had been passed down through the generations came to be referred to as antiques, and second-hand shops that sold them came to be called antique shops or kottoya (curio shops). In modern times, there is a tendency to treat only tableware as antiques, excluding paintings.

もとはごたごたしたつまらないもののことであるが、美術的な書画、刀剣、陶器などをいう。これら古人が使用したものを文人たちが実用と愛玩(あいがん)のために文房具として座右に置く風習は日本では室町時代からおこり、江戸中期ころからそれらを骨董とよぶようになった。明治には古い伝世の美術工芸品を骨董と総称し、それらを販売する古物(こぶつ)屋を古道具屋または骨董屋とよぶようになった。現代では絵画の類を別にし、器物の類だけを骨董として扱う傾向がある。
