The emergence of artificial satellites has brought about great advances in geodesy in recent years. Based on the time-dependent changes in the orbit of Vanguard 1, launched by NASA in 1958, Yoshihide Kozai of the Tokyo Astronomical Observatory determined that the flattening of the Earth is 1/298.25 (the latest value is 1/298.257).
