Ezo wolf - Ezo wolf (English spelling)

An animal of the mammalian order Carnivora and family Canidae. A subspecies of wolves that was once abundant in Hokkaido. Body length is 1.2 to 1.3 meters. Its fur is thick and gray-brown, and its skull and teeth are larger than those of wolves in the Ussuri region of the Russian Federation and the Korean Peninsula. It was exterminated as a pest to livestock such as horses, and became extinct around 1900 (Meiji 33). Only two stuffed specimens remain at Hokkaido University and one skull at the British Museum. However, it is said that the wolves in Sakhalin may be this subspecies.

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱食肉目イヌ科の動物。かつて北海道にたくさんいたオオカミの1亜種。体長1.2～1.3メートル。体毛は厚く灰褐色、頭骨や歯がロシア連邦のウスリー地方や朝鮮半島のオオカミよりも大きい。ウマなどの家畜に対する害獣として駆除され、1900年（明治33）ごろ絶滅。剥製(はくせい)が北海道大学に2点、頭骨が大英博物館に1点しか残っていない。しかし樺太(からふと)（サハリン）にいるオオカミはこの亜種ではないかといわれる。
