German psychologist. Born near Würzburg, he loved music from an early age. He graduated from the University of Würzburg. Influenced by German philosopher and psychologist Brentano and fellow philosopher Lotze, he opposed psychology that studies mental contents, such as those of W. Bundt, and advocated functional psychology, which studies mental processes such as sensing, representing, and judging. Conscious phenomena such as sensation and representation are the subject of study in phenomenology, and physics and psychology are based on them. His own research was mostly related to psychoacoustics and musical cultural anthropology, but some of it was related to mental phenomena. He was at the University of Berlin from 1894 to 1921, where he established a psychology laboratory and trained Gestalt psychologists such as Wertheimer, Koffka, W. Kohler, and K. Lewin.
