A state of increased muscle tone. Rigidity can also be translated as stiffness, rigidity, or ankylosis, so care must be taken. When the muscles of the limbs are in a state of tension and you try to passively bend or straighten them, you feel resistance from the start. Unlike muscle spasms, this resistance is almost constant regardless of the speed of flexion or extension or the beginning and end of the movement, and is called the leadpipe phenomenon or plastic rigidity.
