Semarang - Semarang (English spelling)

A port city on the central north coast of Java Island, Indonesia. Also called Semarang. Capital of Central Java Province. Population 1,005,316 (1990), 459,358 (2018 estimate). With densely populated Central Java as its hinterland, it is a key location for land and sea transportation. Until the 16th century, it was only a small regional port, but since the bay is suitable for anchoring large ships, it has developed beyond other regional ports since the mid-18th century. It is the center of Chinese merchant activities, and the downtown area is home to various warehouses and Chinese shops, as well as a famous Chinese temple. An old church built by the Dutch in 1753 remains. The city extends to the hills of Changji in the south and is developing as a residential area. It is a thriving trading center for tobacco, copra, rubber, and teak, and there are also industries such as machinery and spinning.

インドネシア、ジャワ島北岸中部の港湾都市。セマランともいう。中央ジャワ州の州都。人口100万5316（1990）、45万9358（2018推計）。人口稠密(ちゅうみつ)な中部ジャワを後背地にもち、海陸交通の要地である。16世紀までは地方の小港にすぎなかったが、湾が大型船の停泊地に適することもあり、18世紀中ごろからほかの地方港を抑えて発展した。華僑(かきょう)商人の活動の中心地で、下町には各種の倉庫や華僑の店があり、また中国寺院も有名である。オランダ人が1753年に建設した古い教会も残る。市街は南方のチャンジの丘陵に延び、住宅地として発展している。タバコ、コプラ、ゴム、チーク材の集散が盛んで、機械や紡織などの工業もある。
