Sipsong Panna

Japanese: シプソン･パンナー（英語表記）Sipsong Panna

The name in the Tai Lue language for the southernmost part of Yunnan Province, China, bordering Laos and Myanmar. Written in Chinese characters as Xishuangbanna. Many ethnic Thai people live here, including about 210,000 Tai Lue people. Sipsong represents the number 12, and Panna is said to mean the traditional administrative unit centered on the main basin. From around the 12th century until liberation by the People's Liberation Army of China in 1950, the Tai Lue kingdom existed here. The inhabitants maintain a culture common to the Thai people of northern Indochina, including lifestyle practices around rice (glutinous) cultivation, performing arts, and rituals.

中国，雲南省の最南端部で，ラオス，ミャンマーとの国境に接する地域のタイ･ルー語による呼称。漢字表記では西双版納（シーサンパンナ）。タイ･ルー族の約21万人をはじめ，タイ系民族が多く住む。シプソンは数字の12を表し，パンナーは主たる盆地を中心とする伝統的な行政単位を意味するといわれる。12世紀ころから1950年の中国人民解放軍による解放まで，この地にはタイ･ルー族の王国が存在した。住民の間にはイネ(もち種)栽培をめぐる生活慣行，芸能，儀礼など，インドシナ半島北部のタイ系民族に共通する文化が保持されている。
