Shiogama [city] - Shiogama

Japanese: 塩釜[市] - しおがま

A city in central Miyagi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1941. Its population is 63,566 (1995). The city's official name uses the characters "Shiogama". It faces the southwestern part of Matsushima Bay and includes Shiogama Bay (Sengaura). The islands at the mouth of Matsushima Bay are also part of the city's territory. It has been a port since ancient times, but construction of the modern Shiogama Port began in 1882, followed by the opening of the Shiogama Line, and it has since grown as a port city. In 1910 it was designated a Type 2 Important Port, and is one of the leading commercial and fishing ports in the Tohoku region. The city centre spreads out like trees along the coastal lowlands and valleys, with residential areas in the hills behind.

宮城県中部の市。1941年市制。人口6万3566(1995)。市名は正式には塩竈の字を用いる。松島湾の南西部に面し，うちに塩釜湾(千賀浦)を抱く。松島湾口の島々も市域に属する。古代以来の港であるが，1882年から近代的な塩釜港の建設が始まり，次いで塩釜線が開通，以後，港湾都市として成長した。1910年には第2種重要港湾に指定され，東北有数の商港，漁港となった。市街は海岸沿いの低地と谷筋を樹枝状に伸び，住宅地は背後の丘陵地にある。
