The Rosenkavalier

The Rosenkavalier

A music drama with a libretto by Austrian playwright Hofmannsthal and music by Richard Strauss. Three acts. Completed in 1910, it premiered in Dresden the following year. It is a splendid romantic comedy set to the waltz, set in Vienna in the 1740s under the reign of Maria Theresa. In the aristocratic society of the time, it was customary for men to give silver roses to women as a sign of engagement. Baron Ochs, a country nobleman and snob, becomes engaged to Sophie, the daughter of a wealthy new nobleman, and his relative, the Marshal's Madame, chooses her young lover, Count Octavian, to be the "Knight of the Rose" who will deliver the silver rose. However, Octavian and Sophie immediately fall in love, and, defying the greedy and lustful Ochs, the two are happily united, and the Marshal's Madame steps aside. Although the libretto is archaic, similar to the opera buffa of Mozart's time, Strauss succeeded in giving the work a unique atmosphere through his innovative harmonic techniques, symbolized by the "Silver Rose Motive."

There are many memorable scenes, such as the monologue of the Marshal's wife, who mourns the passing of her youth (Act 1), the sparkling, sensual duet when Octavian (played by a female singer) and Sophie meet (Act 2), and the trio in which three female singers each assert their own individuality (Act 3), making this an opera that is filled with the decadent sweetness of the fin de siècle. Its Japanese premiere was in 1956 (Showa 31).
