Humans, blessed with the light and heat of the sun, have revered the sun as the supreme object of worship since ancient times. How frightened they must have felt during a total solar eclipse, when day suddenly turned to night and they saw the mysteriously shining corona around the black moon. Thus, predictions of solar eclipses were made early on in the Orient and China, and the regularity that is still known today as the saros cycle was known in Babylonian times. The oldest record of the corona can be found in Philostratus' Life of Apollonius of Tyana, where a halo is seen.
